As the team carrying out the strategic study for ESA, we’ve been closely following the evolving cybersecurity landscape within the SATCOM ecosystem. Over the years, the SATCOM sector has expanded significantly, with specialized areas like GOVSATCOM and SECURE SATCOM emerging. Alongside this growth, the complexity of cybersecurity challenges has increased, and it is clear that existing frameworks need to evolve to answer those new challenges. The regulatory landscape for SATCOM cybersecurity is complicated by the dual-use nature of the systems—serving both civilian and military sectors. Additionally, international initiatives, particularly from the United States, are setting the stage for future regulations, such as NIST profiles. Our team is working to help ESA and European stakeholders better understand the evolving cybersecurity regulations in this field. We aim to provide clear insights that will guide the industry toward developing a cohesive and effective cybersecurity framework, tailored to the unique needs of SATCOM
